The House of Commons Library has released its Briefing Paper for the Queen's Speech 2021 due to be delivered on 11 May 2021. The objective of the Queen's Speech is to outline the Government's proposed policies and legislation for the coming parliamentary session.
Whilst the draft Building Safety Bill was published on 20 July 2020, the Briefing Paper does not provide any precise indication of when the draft Bill will be enacted.
The draft Bill underwent scrutiny by the Housing, Communities and Local Government Committee, with a report published on 24 November 2020 which:
- Welcomed the proposed improvements to building safety, however, expressed concern with regards to the draft Bill in its current form.
- Made a series of key recommendations, including urging the Government to include much more detail in the draft Bill or to publish secondary legislation alongside it.
- Requested clarity on the timetable for implementation to allow industry to prepare.
A response from Government is awaited.
