As reported in Construction News (see here), research by the Construction Leadership Council ("CLC") has found a widespread lack of understanding of the requirements of the new building safety regime for higher-risk buildings, as implemented by the Building Safety Act 2022, by construction product manufacturers.
The CLC's research suggests that construction product information generally remains available only in PDFs and/or hard copy formats, and that the majority of construction product manufacturers do not understand “what digitisation of construction product information was or why it was set to become essential to the industry’s efforts to improve building safety, as well as product tracing and sustainability”.
The CLC's report sets out a number of suggested work practices that should be adopted by construction product manufactures to improve the situation. However, until such time as these work practices are adopted and rolled out, the collation of golden thread information for higher-risk buildings is likely be compromised by the lack of available digital product information which, in turn, may adversely impact the construction industry's ability to complete and hand over higher-risk building projects for sign off by the Building Safety Regulator.
