In the first interview of our “Perspectives on Infrastructure” series, Sue Kershaw of Costain looks at the future of infrastructure investment in the UK, particularly given the COVID-19 crisis.
Sue's prediction that the current policy overhaul will deliver long term changes to infrastructure finance will be welcomed by many and will be necessary to underpin the desired levels of investment in this sector. Her thoughts on the creation of a focused infrastructure plan are shared by many of the people we have spoken to. In particular the need for an increased focus on investment outside of London will have been highlighted as a result of the COVID-19 crisis.
We need policymaking to be much more agile, and right now we have people actively looking across the entire portfolio to decide on the best things to accelerate. Traditionally, policymakers have tried to defer decisions on investment – now, people are really trying to do things better and share thinking, which never happened before COVID
