MPs have now approved the Public Charge Point Regulations 2023, which aim to improve the charging experience for EV drivers nationwide.
We reported on the regulations when they were first published in draft form, but as a quick reminder the key requirements of the new regime are:
- transparent pricing, displayed in pence per kilowatt hour;
- contactless payment options for larger charge points within 12 months of the regulations coming into force, followed by payment through at least one roaming provider at all charge points within 24 months;
- open data requirements, allowing apps, online maps and in-car software to identify and locate charge points, tracking charging speeds and availability; and
- the provision of free 24/7 telephone helplines for customers struggling to charge.
It's hoped that the new regulations will make EV charging simpler and more reliable, ultimately removing some of the blockers for individuals thinking about making the switch to electric.
Charge point manufacturers and operators should be aware that different requirements will come into force on a staged basis, with the pricing transparency obligations being effected as soon as the regulations come into force, while other requirements allow for a transitional period of 12 or 24 months.
For any queries on how the new regulations are likely to impact projects you are working on, please contact Charlotte Robinson or Chris Lewis.
